TWELVE HOURS LATER Shawn woke to his link chiming at him. He got up and groaned. He’d been tired enough not to move much as he slept and felt like he’d been staked out in the sun for a week as a result. Shuffling to the desk, he flipped on the link.

“Yeah,” he mumbled.

“You want your mystery woman back, get your sorry ass down here.” Major Wade answered.

“Give me a few to grab a shower ‘n’ I’ll be there.”

“Good plan. Knowing how you work, you didn’t bother before crashing last night, did you?”

Shawn grinned at how well the Major knew him. “Right in one. Be there ASAP.”

He heard Major Wade laughing as the link disconnected. Within an hour, Shawn got himself cleaned up, fed and standing at the foot of the boarding ramp. He took a deep breath to steady a sudden rush of nerves and boarded Major Wade’s Torrent.

As usual, he found the Major working on the flight deck. Without looking up, he gestured for Shawn to take a seat at the navigation station. Shawn did and found a file up on the screen. Feeling more like an intel analyst than an operator with this recent mess, he began to read. When he got done, he sat back, eyes wide, teeth gritted, and fists clenched. Major Wade watched him with a look that said he waited patiently for Shawn’s reaction.

“Holy shit.” Shawn drew out each syllable, unsure if his anger or shock caused his reaction. Either way this was the nastiest curveball he’d been thrown since before helping Eli on New Earth.

“That’s one way to put it. Your woman might end up wiping out a significant portion of the UEG in one fell swoop unless we find a way to get to her first. She’s a modern day version of Typhoid Mary, only a hell of a lot more contagious if they did it right, and with access to critical UEG personnel through the medical system.”

“How the hell did they even do that? I thought that skata was illegal.”

“Apparently someone didn’t play by the rules.” Major Wade’s words bled sarcasm.

Shawn rolled his eyes at the Major. This was a huge part of why Shawn liked him. Major Wade let him get away with things most other military officers would have had his kolasi up on insubordination charges for. Besides that, Major Wade tended to be just as much of a smart ass as Shawn at times.

“I get that. I meant where did the equipment to create that sophisticated of a neural program come from? The Cariana Accords were supposed to prevent anything like that from existing anymore.”

“And political treatises always work just like they’re supposed to.” The sarcasm was even thicker, if that was possible.

“You know, if you’re attempting to call me stupid, it’d be easier just to do so and get it over with.”

“But I so rarely get the opportunity to let my sarcastic side show. This is too much fun.” Major Wade grinned.

“At the expense of someone’s life?”

“Spoil sport.
